
Spring has almost sprung in Connecticut, which means it is time for a little spring clean up. Whether it be piled up leaves in your gutter, overgrown foliage, or dead plants there is probably plenty to do around the house. So while you are reveling in clean spring air, get after these simple maintenance jobs that can prevent costly repairs and rest assure a trouble-free summer.
1. Loose / leaking gutters
Loose or leaking gutters should be replaced immediately as improper drainage can lead to water seepage into the basement. Ensure the drains flow away from the home’s foundation and are free of debris.
2. Rotting wood
Check for any rotting wood around your home frame, especially around windows and doors. This should be replaced prior to spring rains to prevent from internal water damage.
3. Compacted soil
Spring in Connecticut typically brings in plenty of rain, which leaves room for potential flood damage. One way to prevent flooding is by protecting the foundation of your home with compacted soil. It is also important to note that the FEMA Flood Maps in Branford will be updated come May 16, 2016, so be sure to check if your area will be affected by this update, as you may consider purchasing flood insurance.
4. Cracks in concrete steps and walkways
Due to the moisture and cold temperatures you may have developed some crack along your concrete steps or walkways. It would make sense to walk around these areas and inspect if there has been any damage. If so, fill them with silicone caulk or concrete crack filler. Once these areas have been filled in, simply power wash the finished product and seal it for long-term protection.
5. Firewood
Remove firewood stored near the home. Firewood should be stored at least 18 inches off the ground at least 2 feet from the structure.
